VIP opening at BHV Homme:
La journée de l'Homme dans le Marais!
By Adrian Leeds, pictures Pascal Fonquernie ©parismarais 2007

While the world was celebrating WOMEN (La Journée de la Femme: The Day of the Woman), the Bazar de l'Hotel de Ville (BHV) and Le Marais were celebrating MEN. Even Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë stopped what he was doing Wednesday to inaugurate the new BHV Homme department store (behind the main store on rue de la Verrerie) during what was a raucous evening popping champagne corks and watching underwear-clad buff bodies gyrate to popular music.
..................
..................
A Nous Paris and BHV Hommes co-published "Urban Repérages," an advertorial magazine designed to get you in the mood by printing the naked back side of a pretty hot guy juxtaposed next to the front side of his clothed self (evidently by the BHV, of course). Turn the page and you get a glimpse of his naked front side, but unfortunately, leaving too much to our imagination.
..................
..................
Whatever they did to shout louder than the women, worked. The BHV Hommes Saturday afternoon was wall-to-wall men of every size, shape and color. I spotted a hand-full of women among them, but there was more testosterone flowing in its five levels and 4000 square meters of clothing, accessories and services designed just for men than among any army in the world. The café in the courtyard was busy with sun worshippers, every step of the escalators was filled and it was impossible to get near the merchandise for the numbers of shoppers it had attracted on this very warm afternoon.
..................
..................
Of course, it's Le Marais and right in the heart of "Boys Town," so no wonder it will be such a huge success. Au Printemps management must be tearing their hair out contemplating how to counteract such accomplishment, since the BHV is one of the Galeries Lafayette group of retail stores (which includes Monoprix, too).
Take note -- the heavy male presence beats the "sous sol" of the main store, known for being a "meet market" and if your "gay-dar" is in tune, you'll be able to spot who among them might be the best candidate for your next love affair.

BHV HOMME : Men’s Fashion Temple
.................
A new temple dedicated to you gentlemen has just opened it's doors in central Paris. Located in the romantic area of the Marais BHV HOMME is a concept male store with over 150 brands, including many great and some new designers.
.................
4 levels, and 43.000 square feet of everything you may need, that will for sure save you some precious shopping time, but that won't help you save any money. So after shopping you can have a drink in the patio so you won't drop of shopping exhaustion… That is if you are not intimidated by a surounding of mannequins in underwear.
Le BHV HOMME is located, 36 rue de la Verrerie,
75004 Paris.
Opening hours: 10am/8pm monday/saturday
and till 9pm on wednesday and saturday.

Men’s Shopping in the Marais
by Richard Nahem.
The Marais, arguably, the most trend-setting and fashion forward district of Paris, has a fantastic collection of high fashion men’s clothing and shoe shops. Having it all, from skateboarder T’s to rock star style silver leather blazers, no shopper will be disappointed.
Below are some of my top picks of men’s fashion boutiques in the Marais. Most shops open 11AM to 7PM, Monday-Saturday, and some are open Sundays - Many of the shops include women’s clothing.
 |
L’Eclaireur - 12 rue Mahler - Tel. 01 44 54 2 11
Hidden behind a window display of amusing colored felt hats and storefront of Diptyque candles is the most fashionable and exclusive men’s boutique in Paris. The industrial looking shop has the best of collections by Dior, Commes de Garcon, Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten and Prada. One can also find experimental luxury designers, such as Isaac Sellam with his outrageous snakeskin motorcycle jackets, Giorgio Brato printed suede coats, along with status jeans by True Religion and Kozo. Even the most die-hard fashionista will find something here to get excited about. |
 |
Loft Design – 12 rue Sevigne, 20 rue des Francs-Bourgeois Tel 01 42 78 62 95 - Open Sundays
Loft Design, which designs its own line, is a collection of luxurious casuals. Slouchy sweaters, long sleeve tees, and sweatshirts come in subtle dusty colors made of soft cashmere, wool, and cotton make. The clothes are easy to wear, and they are well priced for the quality of the design and fabric. |
 |
Muji - 47 rue des Francs Bourgeois - 01 49 96 41 41 Open Sundays
My favorite store in Paris, Muji, is bliss for anyone looking for inexpensive, well-made basics of shirts, sweaters, pants, coats, underwear, and jackets. The best buy is the Prada knockoff button down shirt for only 29 Euros in white, brown, green, blue and black, Look for the fun, crumpled T-shirts that come in a small square package the size of a paper- weight. Make sure to visit their home shop next door, which has house wares, kitchenware, and stationary. |
Quarterback - 21 rue Vieille du Temple - Tel. 01 40 29 02 30 Open Sundays
If you have a passion for unusual sneakers, Quarterback is the place for you. It has a terrific collection of eclectic colored and unique styled sneakers by Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and New Balance. They also carry hip-hop style clothes by Guilty Brotherhood, and True Religion.
Nodus - 2 rue Vielle du Temple
I am a striped shirt freak and walking into Nodus is like I died and went to heaven.
Nodus has a fabulous collection of bright colored vertical striped and flower power printed button down shirts. A good selection of solid and subtle patterned silk ties compliment the shirts.
Boy’z Bazar – 5 rue de la Bretonnerie Tel. 01 42 71 94 00 - Open Sundays
Boy’z Bazar is the premiere men’s clothing shop in the gay district catering to a gay clientele. It’ s two shops next door to each other, both overpriced except during the sales… one a collections shop and the other a basics shop, are well stocked and have an extensive selection of designers Sonia Rykiel, D&G, G Star, Replay, Paul Smith, Diesel, and Jean Paul Gaultier and more. The great thing about the shop is that you can buy a complete wardrobe with everything from 2 Xist underwear to a Paul Smith blazer, all under one roof.
 |
Shimji - 7 rue de Perche Tel. 01 42 72 10 01
This small boutique in the Northern part of the Marais has the most unique, exciting, and cutting edge clothing in Paris. If you are seeking one of a kind pieces, the kind even your most fashion savvy friends will envy, this is the place for you. It has it’s own private label line and designs from Kiminori Morashita and Share Spirit. One can spend hours in this warm inviting shop, appreciating every garment and accessory like a work of art. A must visit. |
 |
L’Homme Invisible - 13 rue Roi de Sicile-01 42 76 98 95
Billed as an only men’s Bodywear shop, L’Homme Invisible, includes everything worn below the belt. such as boxers, briefs, thongs, swimsuits, pajamas, and more.
The French designer underwear in light cotton and Lycra, has its collections with names like fetish, rhinestone, tattoo, and Scottish. If you are nostalgic for communist chic, check out the Che Guevara print undies. |
L’Habilleur - 44 rue de Poitou Tel. 01 48 87 77 12
L’Habilleur is one of the few or maybe even the only designer discount outlet store in the Marais. It looks like a typical, charming Marais boutique, but look closely and all the clothes are marked down 40-50% .Goodies this season include bright purple, red, and orange corduroy jeans by Paul and Joe, cashmere and soft Italian wool sweaters by Roberto Collina, and vivid striped shirts and hooded solid sweatshirts by Two Flowers.
Jacenko – 18 rue de Poitou Tel. 01 42 71 80 38
Jacenko has a great mix of serious designer dress clothes and casual, fun sportswear. The black and white geometric herringbone Givenchy coat in the window is the coat of the season. They have exclusive distribution in Paris of Holland Esquire, a London label with beautiful English tailored suits and jackets. I was tempted to buy its gorgeous dark brown wool suit with tiny flecks of copper and a black cashmere topcoat with small red cross stitches on the pockets. Their casual s include the Bellrose label, which had a cozy chocolate colored, fake fur lined sweatshirt waiting to keep you warm this winter.
Richard Nahem is an ex native New Yorker who just celebrated his first year living in Paris. He lived all his life in New York and last year he decided to make his lifelong dream of living in Paris come true. He sold his New York apartment and moved lock, stock, and barrel to Paris last August and has not regretted his choice for a moment. He was so inspired by his experience, he is writing a book about it called "Eye Prefer Paris". He also has a blog by the same name, www.eyepreferparis.com, which is an insiders guide to Paris. He writes his blog from his 17th century apartment on St. Paul in the Marais where he woke up this morning to the lovely sound of Piaf playing in his garden courtyard.
