LIVING IN THE HEART OF FRANCE HISTORY

parismarais video

First of all, we are very happy to present our new short film «  In love with le Marais ». If you like it, please put it on your Facebook page or pass it  on to your friends ; in just 5 minutes, you get an insightful overview of the area where the history of France truly started.

September in Le Marais is a very busy month with many trade shows, fashion shows, the Deco Show ; there is also the World Car Show in October. September is one of the most popular months of the year for the tourist industry. This year Paris has beaten all of its previous records with more visitors than ever. It remains the most visited capital in the world. Every day our partner hotels receive requests from visitors hoping to get discounts in September and requesting discounted prices, thinking that it is the beginning of the low season, but this is not the case! Super high season in Paris – with high prices – start in early September. We can never say it enough: if you want to get the bargain of the century for your stay in Paris, come in August, or wait until November or January.

Fortunately, Parismarais.com will always try to find you the best places to stay for the best deals, so you can get a hotel room in Paris in September, perhaps even at reasonable prices. For le Marais Hotels, please make your request by following these links:

As you may have noticed, our site has been completely redone with a php technology, meaning that the url’s you kept in the past in your links will soon disapear or be redirected to new ones.

Every year, the second weekend of September is dedicated to the annual "Journées du Patrimoine", when the whole country takes a peek inside the sites and monuments that only a privileged few usually get to see. September 17th and 18th were especially impressive in Paris as we also celebrated human patrimonial with « La nuit du Feu ».

Exactly 200 years ago, Napoléon the First created The Paris Fire Brigade just after the accidental burning of the Austrian Embassy.  Before that, there was no organisation to fight against the fires but and to help the victims of accidents. It is one of the best things Napoleon created in Paris as well as numbering the streets in a very logical manner with even numbers on one side and odd numbers on the other side. There are nearly 9000 firemen in Paris and the surrounding region of Ile de France. All belong to the French army  and are under the command of the Ministry of Defense. They do 4 hours of exercise everyday; no wonder why they have fabulous bodies and generate passion and admiration for both Parisians and tourists alike! Only two other cities have a similar situation: Marseille and Monaco. In France’s other cities, firemen are volonteers and sometimes have another job.

The Paris Fire Brigade joined with The Republican Horse Guards, the Moulin Rouge girls , Miss France and The singer Lara Fabian to present an amazing show at the Paris Bercy Sport Hall. There were 12,000 spectators present and 700 firemen on stage including the gym team, which could compete easily with any Olympic selection. There was also a historic reconstitution of their equipment throughout the ages. They showed many old Renault trucks, the first ones originally moved by horses. There was also a copy of Napoleon himself in his original costume on a beautiful white horse.

Our favorites are the Musée Carnavalet, Saint Jacques Tower, the recently renovated and cleaned Hôtel de Sully (headquarters of the French monument administration) the Hôtel de Sens (now Bibliotheque Forney, dedicated to graphic design and advertising), and Hôtel Donon, a Baroque museum where you can see a large selection of 1700’s furniture and paintings. There are close to 100 sites to discover in the two arrondissements of the Marais, districts 3 and 4.

NOW GO BACK TO THE MIDDLE AGES

The Carreau Du Temple, next to the 3rd arrondissement’s City Hall, one of the few Paris markets to survive and built under Napoleon III, happened to be situated just above some major constructions from the Templars’ former medieval castle in what we call now « le haut marais ». The project consists in converting the old market into a cultural and sports center, thanks to the initiative of Mr Pierre Aidenbaum, our local mayor. While digging under the market they discovered many house foundations and the remains of St Marie Church, built in the 15th century. They also discovered two cemeteries, one 3 meters under the ground level dating from the 15th century and another one deeper, 6 meters below, which is formerly recognised as the real Templars cemetery with around 600 graves. The press and the local residents had the privilege to visit the site before it was completely removed in order to give space to a new complex that will give the northern Marais many new facilities such as conference rooms, sport halls and modulable theatres.

Here are the few photos we were allowed to take. The Paris Firemen are definitely more sexy! I often think ( and most French do ) that the ultimate luxury is time and not money. There are plenty of ways to be rich, and one of them is to stop thinking that money is the only thing of value. Just look where the private banks are taking us… Finance and speculation are ruling the world… wouldn’t it be better if the world were governened by human beings who have other values? The Templars had an ideal: educating and helping the poor, and the Paris Fire Brigade has an idéal : they help and save 450,000 Parisians each year… Some of you would think it’s cheap philosophy, but happiness is also a value and of course one of the best places to find it is in Paris !

In the next issue, we’ll show you how the Marais is changing, with great new shops and galleries we have just discovered and are happy to promote for their creativity.

A bientôt !
