Bonjour Parismarais readers.

We have 7 pieces of good news to report, and we think you'll appreciate the finds.

1 / A new luxury boutique hotel, completely redesigned a year ago, has joined the Parismarais hotel network. The four-star HOTEL DU JEU DE PAUME is located in the heart of Ile Saint Louis and is a must for any visitor to the Marais.

Originally built in in 1634, it wasn't one of the luxurious mansions on the island, but rather an early tennis court.  The original game was played with the bare hand instead of a racket, hence the name Jeu de Paume or hand game. Popularized by monks and villagers in the south of France, the game was a favourite pastime from the 14th to the 17th century and is the precursor to our modern sport tennis. Tenez (get ready) the term used before a serve, soon evolved to Tennis. Other terms come from the old game. For instance, deuce originates from the word deux or two and Love is a deformation of œuf (egg). Anglophones clearly had a hard time pronouncing the French.

Today however, instead of tennis courts, you'll find a warm, cozy, contemporary hotel with a beautiful atrium, inviting rooms, old-beamed ceilings, stylish furnishings and a terrific location. So come and join the proud citizens of the Ile St. Louis, and you too can proudly claim to go to the continent or the mainland when you leave the island and head to Paris. Soon on parismarais.com at the best possible rate.

2 / We are now proud media partners of Les Clefs d'Or, one of the world’s most prestigious professional tourist associations. When you see hotel staff with mini golden keys pinned to their lapel, you know they're official members of this professional association.  These smiling men and women are trained to welcome you. They’re the experts on the city and will fulfil your every wish! Things like reserving restaurants, arranging spa services, recommending hot spots and interesting nightlife and booking transportation is their speciality.

The Clefs d'Or Association was formed in France in October 1929 and now boasts over 3700 members in over 40 countries. In Paris there are nearly 300 members at such elegant venues like the Ritz, Bristol, George V and several Marais luxury locations

3 / We’ve created a media partnership with the CNM (Center of National Monuments) located in one of the most fabulous mansions in the Marais… the Hotel de Sully. The French are always quick to defend their rich cultural heritage and this Center does just that. Abbeys, chateaux, prehistoric caves and archaeological sites are under their protective aegis.

The mansion itself was built in 1625 and Henry IV’s financial minister, Sully, was happy to move in and enjoy this French Renaissance marvel. Built between courtyard and garden, it’s a typical 17th mansion so popular in the Marais.

Don’t miss the incredible bookshop with original wood beams. Filled with extensive architectural and historic books on France and the Marais, the books are mostly in French. But there’s a small English section, too! And they’re proud to distribute our new Marais maps. You can also find Marianne Ström’s fabulous photographic journey into the Marais “Le Marais en Details”.

4/ The winter sales are on and will continue until the end of February. This year is especially outstanding due to the “crisis.” Many shops must sell their remaining winter stock which is higher than normal this year— one more great reason to come to Paris now! Plus, you can get discounts at most hotels and guesthouses where you’ll enjoy a more personalised welcome.

7 / A SPECIAL GUIDED TOUR: MIDNIGHT in PARIS Today

Nostalgia and the Lost Generation

Join the ranks of Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, F Scott Fitzgerald and even Picasso. All these great writers and artists tramped the streets of Paris in the raucous1920s enjoying the beauty of the city, the high dollar, the cafés and alcohol. Prohibition was in full swing in the States and Hemingway came to France to escape the “wide lawns and narrow minds” as he put it. They all immortalized their experience in books and on canvas and ensured that the Paris myth carried on.
Woody Allen cleverly brought them to life in his latest film. And you can take a tour and experience it all first-hand yourself with Paris Perspectives’s, Pamela Grant.
We can’t promise a 1920s French limousine will drive up and whisk you back to the folly of jazz age, but all the magic and beauty of Paris will be served up in spades. Check out her site: www.parisperspectives.com
