LE MARAIS UNDER THE RAINBOW.

blank

Bonjour PARISMARAIS Readers,

The city of light turned rainbow this weekend. Approximately half a million people marched the Paris streets for this year's Gay Pride Parade. In a procession of color, gaiety and fun along the streets of the capital, the now legendary Paris Gay Pride proclaimed its protest message against all forms of discrimination, in favor of equality and putting an end to homophobia.

This year was very special indeed as only two months ago the French parliament adopted the law for equality of rights regarding marriage - 25 years after the European pioneer, Denmark. The first French same-sex couple was married in Montpellier just one month ago.

As usual, the parade had a theme, which was a reflection of society, a subject of debate, or a sensitive topic. This year was a celebration of same-sex marriage “Le marriage pour tous” as well as asking for complete equality of rights in adoption and civil rights such as retirement pensions.

For 30 years colorful floats, costumes, and characters mingle with supporters who have come to cheer on their actions or parade their own identity. The floats file past a crowd of locals as well as more and more families who come to share their joy. We met a new type of family from Sweden made up of 2 mothers and 3 girls who were enchanted to pose for us.

The parade was unforgettable and magic. It started in Paris at Montparnasse and reached place de la Bastille at 6 p.m. In the evening, for the first time - thanks to Paris city hall and the police department - the 4th arrondissement streets around “Gayland” were closed and spontaneous parties at every street corner entertained the crowd until midnight. The ambiance was tranquil and relaxed, as if the crowd were at last in peace after 30 years of fights for equal rights. This is when you realize the Marais is a village where differences are a plus, a new occasion to meet people and share the joy of life.

In two weeks there will be many occasions to have fun in the Marais with the famous “Bal des Pompiers” all over Paris and especially at our favorite location, rue de Sévigné.

Keep in touch, until then here's a selection of pictures our reporters took in the Marais streets.

A bientôt!

The Parismarais Team
