HOW TO GET TO LE MARAIS ?

THE EASY SOLUTION :

HOW TO BOOK YOUR CAR SERVICE :

THE CHEAP SOLUTION IN YOU TRAVEL ALONE : METRO + RER TRAIN

From Gare du Nord Eurostar train terminal:
- Métro line 5 direction Place d' Italie, stop at République for North Marais or Filles du Calvaire. Line 11 and get off at Hôtel de Ville or Saint Paul for south Marais
From Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport:
- RER express train takes you to Gare du Nord train station in 30 to 45 minutes for around 10 Euros, it's the fastest way to travel to central Paris, but not the best if you have lots of luggage.

Download the map here

TAXIS: THE LAST MINUTE, QUICK SOLUTION

From the airport:

Take the official Paris Cab, official cabs have a meter, a registered number and a sign on their roof. If you re not happy with their service, note the number and complain!

There is always an extra charge for pick up at the airport or train station, a minimum fee of 5 euros + 1 euro extra per luggage so don't be surprised if the price they ask is a bit more than the one written on the meter. It’s normal. You don't have to tip unless they are especially nice to you.

Going to the airport (or leaving for a train station or anywhere else)

Tip: If you decide to take a Parisian cab, note that the meter will run during the ride and can run high if you hit traffic. Average price is between 50 to 70 euros per ride minimum from center of town to the airport.

WITH YOUR OWN CAR

Probably the most inconvenient choice in Paris is to rent a car. Traffic is busy, and parking is difficult and expensive. In fact, the public transportation system is so good in central Paris that 70% of Parisians refuse to own a car.
If you choose to rent a car, here are the directions: When you leave the motorway, enter the « péripherique », the circular road around Paris. Always follow the direction "Paris Centre" or « Châtelet » or « République ».
Then you will have to find a parking place at 2 euros per hour. Private covered car parks can be arranged for you starting at about 20 euros per day on request.

IN CASE OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY…

BY RICHARD NAHEM*
PICTURES OF HOTEL DIEU BY PASCAL FONQUERNIE WITH COURTESY OF CLAIRE PATRELLE FROM HOTEL DIEU HOSPITAL, THE FIRST HOSPITAL CREATED IN PARIS IN 686.

One of the few things most travelers don't think about when they go on holiday is what to do if they suddenly get sick or need healthcare. The good news is that France has one of the best and accessible healthcare systems in the world, and you can be assured that you will easily find the care you need in case of a health emergency or if you just need general medical care.
Doctor visits are relatively cheap compared to the U.S.A standard doctor's fee is 20-60 euros; almost what a co-pay is in the states. Certain doctors are on call 24 hours a day to make house visits. Rates range from 50 to 100 euros.

If you are an EEC member your national healthcare company will pay back almost all expenses to the French social security system, so basically you pay nothing if you are a resident of the European union.
As of now, I have what is called a long-term visitor visa, which means I don't pay in to the French social security system yet and must obtain private health insurance. Although I have a good insurance policy, I purposely choose a high deductible because I knew the doctor visits here would be so reasonable.

My healthcare experiences have been very positive and I have felt welltaken care of since I've been living here. I found an excellent andreliable GP doctor, Dr. Thierry Buffel, on the rue de Rivoli. His rateis 30 Euros a visit and last year I went for a full check-up,including an expensive cardio /heart rate test and the cost was only100 euros. I went for blood work in addition to the check-up and that
cost 42 euros, so altogether the check-up with the blood work costless than 150 euros.

I recently had to have some emergency dental care and I was veryimpressed by the professionalism of the dentist Stephane Brun and thestate of the art equipment in the office. There were certain technicalthings I had not seen before including a computer screen above the
dentist chair that immediately showed X-rays that were just taken. Ineeded to have two root canals and two crowns put in and Dr. Brunworked tirelessly on end for hours making sure everything was perfect.I've never been to a dentist who was so thorough. It was like havingan artist work on my mouth. The cost was about 40% less than it wouldbe in New York.

So if you are visiting France and have any concerns about finding goodhealth care, no need to worry: France's comprehensive health caresystem will provide you with what you need.
